Moggaro builds aluminium boats in Spain. The works were set up in 2003 and lie near Segovia, some eighty kilometres north of Madrid and well inland. Building is for leisure and for professional use: jet boats, diving boats, passenger boats, catamarans, workboats, fire boats, survey boats and fishing boats. You recognise them by the angular welded shape made from flat plate, the mostly open deck with a rail running all the way round and the functional finish without a paint film; the aluminium stays visible.
Our model records list 41 Moggaro models: 35 motorboats, four cabin trimarans and two motor yachts. Build years start in 2003 and run into current production. Forty one series are recorded: the base models 400, 500, 550 and 650; the Water Jet versions 480, 530 WJ, 580, 600 and 700; the Cargo versions 400 and 600; the special forms 650 Banana Boat, 650 Dive and 750 Trabajo; and the one offs 650 Custom, 730 RiverJet and 800J Custom. Lengths run from 4 to 27 metres, half the models between 6.5 and 9.6 metres. The number gives the length in centimetres.
A jet drive changes what happens when the bottom comes up. There is no exposed propeller blade to lose, which is why these boats work in rivers and shallow water, but the drive takes in whatever the water is carrying, so gravel and weed become the problem instead. Aluminium behaves in the same spirit: it dents rather than cracking, and a dent across a weld is a repair rather than a scratch.
