Monachus Boatyard; cover, cost and conditions

Monachus Yachts builds its boats in Dalmatia, in the business park of Muć, some 30 kilometres inland from Split. The brand was created by Hari Tabak, who has been drawn to boat design since his sailing school days in 1972. He took the name from the Mediterranean monk seal, Monachus in Latin, whose calm movement through the water caught his eye. The yard builds motor boats and motor yachts and, in its own words, puts stability, handling and well thought out ergonomics ahead of maximum interior volume. The boats are recognisable by their restrained, timeless lines: the Issa 45 follows the lobster style with a generous cockpit, while the Pharos 43 has a more Mediterranean look. Both names are ancient place names of the Dalmatian islands, Issa on Vis and Pharos on Hvar.

Our model records list three designs: two motor boats and one motor yacht. The Issa 45 and the Pharos 43 both measure 14.25 metres, whatever the numbers in their names suggest, and differ mainly in style and layout. At 21.5 metres the Monachus 70 is the largest boat of the brand; the yard presented it as the Monachus 70 Fly at the Venice boat show in May 2022. In our records all three lines start with build year 2019 and run into the most recent build years. This is a current range, so new boats come onto the market alongside used ones.

Boats like these tend to spend their summers hopping between islands, which means many short passages, frequent mooring manoeuvres and long days at anchor in the sun. On a used Monachus, the engine hours and the service record of the diesels tell you most, together with the condition of shafts, seals and the bow thruster. Gelcoat and deck surfaces take a beating from Adriatic sun and salt, so look closely at hatches, window seals and any exterior woodwork. A flybridge version adds weight up high and more fittings to inspect. With a new boat, the handover protocol, the commissioning report and complete documentation for engines and electronics are worth as much as the boat itself.

What this means for the cover

As the Monachus 70, Monachus Issa 45 and Monachus Pharos 43 by Monachus Boatyard series are still

in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Monachus 70 by Monachus Boatyard series:

On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.

Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.

For the Monachus Issa 45, Monachus Pharos 43 by Monachus Boatyard series:

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.

Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
