Moomba; cover, cost and conditions
Moomba is based in Maryville, Tennessee, and belongs to the Skier's Choice group. The idea took shape in the late 1980s, when inboard boats were getting ever more expensive: the aim was a towboat that cost less without giving up the core qualities a ski and wake boat needs. The first hull mould came from an Australian towboat builder, and in 1990 the Boomerang appeared as the first Moomba. Skier's Choice itself was later formed around the purchase of the Supra and Moomba brands from United Marine of Tennessee. The boats are still made in Maryville, and the range is built entirely around wakeboarding and wakesurfing.
Our model records hold eleven Moomba entries, all motorboats, built between 1995 and 2018. Lengths sit close together, from 5.43 metres for the Boomerang to 7.01 metres for the Moomba Mobius XLV Gravity. The Mobius family accounts for five entries: Mobius, Mobius V, Moomba Mobius LS, Moomba Mobius LSV and Moomba Mobius XLV Gravity. The Moomba Mobius LSV ran longest, from 2000 to 2018. The Moomba Outback and Moomba Outback V span 2007 to 2017, and the list is completed by the Kambera WA, the Moomba 21 from 1995 to 2001 and the Moomba Liquid Force LSV. None of the lines in our records reaches the most recent build years, so every boat on the market today is second hand.
A towboat works hard. Engine hours climb quickly when a boat spends whole afternoons pulling riders, so the service history of the inboard, the raw water impeller and the drive deserves a close look before buying. Check the hull bottom and the transom for stress cracks, and make sure a tower and its mountings are tight. Ballast bags and pumps, where fitted, should be tested for leaks. Most boats of this type live on lakes and rivers and travel on a trailer between home and the ramp, so brakes, bearings and lights on the trailer matter as much as the boat itself.
