In Denmark, Mopa is a name hunters and anglers know. The first boat, the Mopa 2, was designed by the boatbuilder Karl-Erik Hvid. Nils Bierre Hansen took over the rights in 1978 and kept building it for decades as a 17 foot all round boat for wildfowling, fishing and days out on the water. The Mopa Patrol followed from 1985. On 1 August 2011 the rights passed to Simon Kortegaard, who continues the boats as Mopa Patrol Både. The hulls come from Langø Skibs- og Bådebyggeri near Nakskov, while Kortegaard handles fitting out and repairs in his own workshop at Vilsund. The boats are plain and open, with a generous working cockpit.
Our model records list six designs, all classed as motorboats. Build years start in 2008 with the Mopa Patrol at 5.32 metres, recorded until 2016, followed by the Mopa Patrol Explorer of the same length from 2016 to 2022. Three designs reach into the most recent build years: the Mopa Expedition at 5.85 metres from 2015, the Mopa Landgangsjollen at five metres from 2016 and the Mopa Kegnæs 470 HE at 4.7 metres from 2017. The Mopa Artic Expedition, also 5.85 metres, appears from 2020 to 2025. All six boats sit between 4.7 metres and just under six.
A Mopa is a small open outboard boat, often kept on a trailer and used in shallow bays, fjords and marshland. That kind of use leaves marks: check the keel line and the bow for scrapes from beaching on stones, and look at the transom around the engine mounting. Built in buoyancy and drainage matter in an open boat, so make sure scuppers and bilge are clear. On a used boat, ask how the outboard has been serviced and whether the trailer rollers and lights are sound. A Mopa that has been rinsed and stored dry between trips will show it.
