Worth knowing
Motomarine AG; cover, cost and conditions
Motomarine AG (Gropp 550 F) is a Swiss business on Lake Constance, based in Gunterswilen since November 2025 and in Tägerwilen before that. Under the Gropp name it builds aluminium boats to order, each one specified individually and described by the company as unsinkable. It also sells used boats and engines from Mercruiser, Honda and Yamaha and runs a repair and maintenance workshop. The range is shaped by the lake on its doorstep and by owners who want a boat fitted out their own way. Gropp boats are easy to place by their aluminium hulls and their names: the number roughly gives the length in centimetres, and letters such as F, FV or Sport mark different versions of a similar size.
Our model records list twelve motorboats, all running into the most recent build years. Ten of them are Gropp designs. The Gropp 750 is the oldest entry and runs from 2004 to the present. The Gropp 600, 690 and 810 joined in 2012, followed in 2015 by the Gropp 550 F, 580 FV, 590 F and the three Sport versions, 650 Sport, 730 Sport and 780 Sport. The longest boat is the Gropp 810 at 8.15 metres. Two Smartliner entries appear under the same name as well, the Smartliner 150 from 2011 and the Smartliner 170 from 2012; the Smartliner 150 is the shortest boat on the list at 4.5 metres. Five designs stay under six metres, four measure seven metres or more.
A welded aluminium hull built for lake use is simple to keep, but it is not maintenance free. Fresh water is kind to aluminium, yet galvanic corrosion can still start where stainless fittings, bronze parts or a poorly wired shore connection meet the hull, so anodes and wiring deserve a regular look. Because every Gropp is built to order, two boats of the same model can differ a lot in layout, engine and equipment. On a used one, ask for the original specification, check the welds around the transom and engine mounts and look at the buoyancy compartments that keep the boat afloat.
