Mulder; cover, cost and conditions
Mulder is a Dutch family yard. Dirk Mulder founded it in 1938 in a small metal workshop in Voorschoten, near Leiden. Its first boats were wooden racing sailboats, and from 1965 the business concentrated entirely on motor yachts. In 1984 Dick Mulder took charge at the age of 22 and moved the yard towards ever larger yachts of up to 28 metres. Working with the Dutch designer Guido de Groot, he developed the Convertible, Wheelhouse and Flybridge series. A new yard building went up from 2010 and opened in 2013. Mulder yachts are told apart by layout, with open flybridge, enclosed wheelhouse or hardtop, and by a model number that follows the length in feet.
Our model records hold ten motor yachts from build years 1995 to 2018, and none reaches the recent build years. The models are numbered from 54 to 92: Mulder 54, 59, 63, 68 HT, 70, 73, 76, 85, 88 and 92. The Mulder 76 starts earliest, in 1995, while the others begin in 2002 or 2003. Most entries end in 2012; the Mulder 73 runs to 2016 and the Mulder 54 to 2018. The smallest is the Mulder 54 at 16.5 metres, the largest the Mulder 92 at 28 metres. Six of the ten designs are longer than 20 metres, four stay below, and not one is shorter than 16 metres.
A yacht of this size is a set of systems as much as a hull. On a used Mulder, a full survey should include the engines and gearboxes with oil analysis, the generators, stabilisers, air conditioning and hydraulics, and the condition of the paintwork, which is costly to renew on a large hull. Ask for the maintenance history from the yard or the crew, and for records of any refit. Teak decks on older yachts may need recaulking or replacement. Many of these boats have spent seasons in the Mediterranean, so check the effects of sun and heat on canvas, seals and exterior varnish as well.
