Mulder Shipyard; cover, cost and conditions

Mulder builds motor yachts in the Netherlands, at Zoeterwoude near Leiden. Dirk Mulder founded the business in 1938 and began with wooden sailing yachts; the first steel boat came at the end of the 1940s and in the 1950s the house went over to that material entirely. From 1965 the motor yacht became the centre of the range, starting with the Super Favorite Cruiser series. The company is still in family hands. You recognise the yachts by the curved steel hull with its soft sheer, the very clean transition between hull and superstructure and the high gloss painted surfaces.

Our model records list 46 Mulder models, all of them motor yachts. Build years start in 1971 and run into current production. Forty six series are recorded: the Favorite models 1300 Cabrio, 1400, 1500 and 1700 and the older Favorites in 11.50, 12.50, 13.50, 15.00, 16.50 and 18.00 metres; the Wheelhouse models 70, 73, 75 and 76; the Convertible 54 Open, the 59 in three versions and the 68; the Flybridge 94 Voyager and 98; and the ThirtySix. Lengths run from 8.5 to 36 metres, half the models between 13.5 and 20.7 metres.

Two things about a steel yacht have nothing to do with its year of build. Steel rusts wherever the protection is broken, and by preference where nobody looks, so plate thickness readings say more than a date does. And on a boat finished to this standard a great deal of the value sits in the joinery and the paintwork, neither of which appears in a length figure.
