Mustang Marine Pty Ltd; cover, cost and conditions

Mustang Marine is an Australian builder of sports cruisers. From 1998 the company was owned by Gary Garoni, and under his ownership boats such as the Mustang 4600 Sport Cruiser were built, 14.75 metres long with a beam of 4.3 metres. In March 2010 Mustang went into administration after Standard Bank withdrew its support. Later that year Maritimo, led by Bill Barry-Cotter and Steve Searle, bought the intellectual property and moulds and kept the Mustang name going, partly through existing dealers and partly through its own. Production of Mustang boats ended in 2019. The typical Mustang is a sports cruiser with an open cockpit and cabins forward, joined by a flybridge model.

Our model records list eight Mustang designs, all classed as motor yachts. Seven belong to the SC line, short for Sports Cruiser: the 2800 SC at 8.4 metres, the 3000 SC at 9.65 metres, the 3200 SC at 9.8 metres, the 3500 SC at 11.08 metres, the 3800 SC at 11.6 metres, the 4200 SC at 12.55 metres and the 4600 SC at 14.75 metres, the largest. The M41 Sports Flybridge at 13.53 metres is listed from 2004 to 2011. The oldest entry is the 3800 SC with build year 1979, the 2800 SC starts in 1998 and the other SC models in 2003. All SC models end in our records in 2012, and none reaches into the latest build years.

Every Mustang is now a used boat, and plenty of them change hands in Australia. A boat that has spent years in tropical sun and warm water wants a careful look: gelcoat crazing, the seals on hardtop and windscreen, and the state of the canvas. Most of the larger models run twin diesels on shafts or stern drives, so hours, service records and a sea trial with both engines under load are essential. Air conditioning, generator and electronics add comfort but also items to check. Bringing a boat home from Australia is a project in itself, and the paperwork for the hull and engines should be complete.
