Mystere; cover, cost and conditions

Mystere is a sport catamaran brand from Canada. The builder was Mystere International, based in Pointe-Calumet in the province of Quebec, according to the US Coast Guard's manufacturer register. Its boats are open beach cats: two slim hulls, a trampoline stretched between them and a single mast carrying main and jib, rigged on the sand, pushed out through the surf and sailed from the trapeze. A figure in the name gives the rough length in metres, and suffixes such as ST, SX, XL, Fun or Master mark the version.

Our records list ten Mystere models, all sport catamarans. The 3.5 ST, 3.5 SX and 3.7 measure 3.7 metres each; the 5.0 ST and 5.0 XL come in at 5 metres, the 5.5 Fun and 5.5 Master at 5.5, the Cobra at 5.52 and the 6.0 SX and 6.0 XL at 6 metres. Six models start in 1990 and four join in 1996: the 3.7, both 5.5 versions and the Cobra. The two 3.5 boats end in 1998, every other line in 2005.

A Mystere lives on a beach trolley or road trailer and goes to the water for an afternoon of fast sailing. With the youngest boats around twenty years old, trampoline, shrouds, trapeze wires and hull bottoms deserve a close look each spring. Storing the boat out of the sun and off the ground keeps the hulls from soaking and the sails from fading.
