Naval Force 3; cover, cost and conditions
Naval Force 3 is a French yard based in La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast. Founded in 1986, it concentrated on multihulls for fast cruising: Challenge trimarans, catamarans such as the Twist, Piana and Tropic, and a few monohulls aimed at racing. Epoxy runs through its construction. A Piana 30 is described as a stiff build in CP epoxy, and a Tropic 56 built in La Rochelle in 1997 combines wood and epoxy above the waterline with GRP below it. Alongside the owner versions, the yard's range also lists dedicated charter models. The series names tell the boats apart: Challenge for the trimarans, Twist, Piana and Tropic for the catamarans.
Our model records list 22 designs: 19 cruising catamarans, two beach catamarans and one trimaran, the Challenge 37. Entries begin with build year 1985 and end in 2009 with the Challenge 30, so none reaches the most recent build years. The Tropic family accounts for six designs, from the Tropic 12 at 11.96 metres to the Tropic 20 at exactly 20 metres, the longest boat on the list. Three Piana versions follow, along with the Twist and Twist 6,50 at 6.5 metres and older designs such as the Casamance 44, Corneel 26, Maldives and Prelude. At the small end sit the Enthousiaste 235 and 310 beach cats at 2.35 and 3.1 metres. Eleven designs exceed ten metres, five of them 15 metres or more.
A wood epoxy hull is light and stiff but wants dry wood under its skin. On a used Tropic or Piana, a moisture meter run along the topsides, the bridgedeck and the beam joints tells more than any brochure. Daggerboard cases and rudder bearings take high loads on a fast multihull and should be inspected for cracks and play. Cruising catamarans of this size often log long ocean miles, so the age of the standing rigging, the state of the trampoline and the condition of the sails matter as much as the hulls. The small Enthousiaste beach cats are simple boats, where the hull joints and the trailer deserve the main attention.

For the Challenge 30, Challenge 37,
Drop 26 by Naval Force 3 and 2 more series the market value and the replacement cost often differ
widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Piana 37, Tropic 12, Tropic 15 by Naval Force 3 and 14 more series there is no list price
left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Challenge 30, Drop 26, Piana 30 by Naval Force 3 and further series:
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,
and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
For the Challenge 37 by Naval Force 3 series:
On a trimaran the floats and their beams are the weak point,
on folding models the mechanism as well.
For the Enthousiaste 235, Enthousiaste 310 by Naval Force 3 series:
Open catamarans are beached and trailed, so most damage happens ashore and in transit,
not on the water.
