New Marine; cover, cost and conditions

New Marine comes from Hennebont in Brittany. Noël Louvet founded the company in the early eighties with a clear aim: to build sport catamarans from rotomoulded polyethylene. Until then beach catamarans were mostly made of polyester and glassfibre and did not take kindly to knocks on the beach. The plastic hulls made the Newcat tough and easy to handle, which is why they turned up for decades at French sailing schools and with leisure sailors. In 2009 ERPLAST, a French maker of plastic Optimists, took over New Marine together with the Newcat range. The boats are easy to recognise by the New Cat or Newcat lettering and their polyethylene hulls.

Our model records list 20 designs: 16 beach catamarans and four dinghies. The oldest entries, the Newcat 12 (Junior), New Cat 14 and New Cat 15, start in 1984. Among the catamarans follow the Newcat 12 Racing, the 15 in Club, Evasion and Special form, the 16 as Club and Special, the F1 and F2, the New Bat and the Newcat Swing, at 4.9 metres the longest boat of the brand. The dinghies are the Newbat 3.6, New Bat Miniji, New Bat Slider and the Optibat, at 2.35 metres the smallest boat. The youngest entry is the New-Cat 10.5, listed from 2008 to 2015. No design reaches the most recent build years; most end between 2001 and 2008.

Polyethylene hulls shrug off knocks, but they age in the sun and cannot simply be patched with resin; damage usually needs plastic welding by someone who knows the material. On a used Newcat it is worth checking the hulls for deep scratches and soft spots, the beams and their fixings, the trampoline for torn stitching and the rudder fittings for play. Shrouds and forestay should be replaced when the wire shows broken strands. Many of these boats spent years at sailing schools, so a launching trolley and a set of spare parts are often part of a sensible purchase.

What this means for the cover

For the New-Cat 10.5, Newbat 3.6,

New Bat Slider by New Marine and 16 more series the market value and the replacement cost often

differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the New Cat 14 by New Marine series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the New-Cat 10.5, Newcat 12 (Junior), Newcat 12 Racing by New Marine and further series:

Open catamarans are beached and trailed, so most damage happens ashore and in transit,

not on the water.

For the Newbat 3.6, New Bat Slider, Optibat by New Marine and further series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
