New Zealand Yachts grew out of the port of Whangārei in the north of New Zealand. In the early 2000s Allen Jones took over the port together with a commercial shipyard, where fishing vessels and coastal freighters are repaired and sailing and motor yachts are refitted. For its own yachts the company chose a distinctive platform, the wavepiercer: two slender hulls that slice through a wave instead of climbing over it. In 2005 it launched Spirit, a 35 metre motor yacht on this platform, styled inside and out by Ken Freivokh. Work stopped during the downturn that began in 2008. Today the company is again developing wavepiercer superyachts, among them a 47 metre explorer, also drawn by Freivokh.

A wavepiercer behaves differently from a conventional motor yacht. The narrow hulls cut through head seas with less pitching, which suits long ocean passages, but the bridging deck between them takes real loads and deserves close inspection. On a vessel built between 2000 and 2010, buyers should look at the age of engines and generators, the condition of the steering gear in both hulls and any repairs to the bows. Twin hulls also mean two of almost everything below the waterline. Docking needs a wide berth, and haul out facilities must be able to lift a beam far greater than on a monohull of the same length.
