Onyx Marine is based in Botrivier, inland from Cape Town in South Africa. The yard was founded by Francois van Dyk and Chris Gooding, two engineers who have sailed all their lives and wanted a compact catamaran that is still built for open water. The result is the Onyx 10.5, aimed at owners who want to head offshore without stepping up to a boat of 40 feet or more. She is easy to recognise: forward-raked windows in the coachroof, mini-keels instead of daggerboards and a rig laid out for easy handling. The propulsion is unusual too, with one central Vetus engine driving both propellers through a hydraulic transmission.
