Ostac Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Ostac is an Australian multihull builder. Its name is tied to the trimarans of Ian Farrier: the F-31 was built by Ostac in Australia while Corsair Marine built it in California. Ostac also produced catamarans, among them the Parallax 11 to a design by Robin Chamberlain. For its time the construction was ambitious: biaxial and triaxial cloth vacuum bagged over a foam core and laminated with vinylester resin. The result is a light structure, and that is what marks the boats out: slim hulls carrying little weight for their size.
Our model records list four designs. Three are entered as sailing catamarans, the Parallax 9, the Parallax 11 and the Farrier F 31, and one as a trimaran, the Tramp. The F 31 deserves a second look: the source describes it as a trimaran, while our records file it as a catamaran. The Parallax 11 is the largest at eleven metres and runs from 1983 to 1997. The Parallax 9 at nine metres and the F 31 at 9.4 metres start in 1989, and the Tramp, the smallest at 5.95 metres, appears from 1990. All lines end in 1997; none reaches the recent build years.
Foam sandwich hulls are light and stiff, but a used one needs a careful survey. Tap the hulls and decks for delamination, and look for soft spots near fittings, crossbeams and the bows, where impacts happen. On catamarans, the bridgedeck and beam attachments carry high loads and should show no cracking. On a trimaran, check the folding or beam system and the float connections. Rudders and daggerboards on light multihulls suffer in groundings, so inspect their cases. A boat from the nineties with good paperwork is a strong starting point.

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,
