Overblue Shipyard; cover, cost and conditions

Overblue was set up in 2013 by a group of like-minded people around the designer Stefano Nolletti, with a small production site in Lombardy in northern Italy. Their approach ran the other way round from most yards: they began with comfort, safety and the size of the living spaces, and only then turned to naval architecture, engineering and styling. What came out of this were power catamarans, boats whose twin hulls give them a great deal of interior volume for their length. On the water an Overblue reads as two slim hulls carrying a broad, continuous superstructure.

Our model records hold twelve designs, all of them power catamarans. The Overblue 44 opens the list in 2013; the 48, 58, 58 P and 68 follow from 2014, the 52 from 2015, and the 50, 50X, 54, 64, 64 Penthouse and 74 from 2016. Lengths run from 13.9 metres for the 44 and 48 to 22.4 metres for the 68 and 74. Half the range stops in 2019, while the 50, 50X, 54, 64, 64 Penthouse and 74 carry on into the most recent build years. One detail stands out: the 58 P shares its 19.5 metres with the 64 and the 64 Penthouse. Five designs exceed 19 metres.

Twin hulls mean twice the underwater work. Both hulls want antifouling, both running gears need checking, and anodes on two shafts or drives wear at their own pace. A boat of this size also tends to be used as a floating home for long summer stays, so generators, air conditioning and watermakers see many hours. When looking at a used Overblue, the service records of both engines matter as much as the layout. A haul-out survey that inspects each hull separately, including the underside of the bridgedeck, gives a fair picture. Marinas sometimes charge catamarans by beam, which is worth knowing before choosing a home berth.

What this means for the cover

As the Overblue 50, Overblue 50X,

Overblue 54 by Overblue Shipyard and 3 more series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Overblue 44, Overblue 48,

Overblue 52 by Overblue Shipyard and 3 more series the market value and the replacement cost often

differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Overblue 50, Overblue 50X, Overblue 54 by Overblue Shipyard and further series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
