PDQ Yachts is based in Whitby, Ontario. The company was formed in 1987 by engineer Harvey Griggs, designer Alan Slater, who had spent some twenty years drawing one-off catamarans, and Simon Slater. The prototype PDQ 34 was built on the site of the former Whitby Boat Works and the first boat went afloat in the summer of 1989. Construction is glassfibre with triaxial knitted cloth, isophthalic resin and a foam core laid up under vacuum. The early sailing cats are easy to recognise by their pair of outboard engines instead of inboards. Over time the yard moved firmly towards power catamarans.

The PDQ 32 and the PDQ 36 Mark-II are both listed from 1991 to 1999; at 9.63 metres the PDQ 32 is the smallest boat of the brand, while the Mark-II measures 11.1 metres. The power cats follow from 2001: the PDQ 34 at 10.55 metres until 2011 and the PDQ 41 at 12.5 metres from 2002 to 2012. None of the four reaches the most recent build years, and the last entries stop in 2012. Anyone looking for a PDQ today is buying second-hand, with the oldest hulls now more than thirty years old.

A foam-cored catamaran rewards a careful survey. Moisture can creep into the core around deck fittings, stanchion bases and hatches, so a moisture meter and a tap test belong on the checklist. On the sailing models the twin outboards and their brackets deserve a close look, as do the bridgedeck underside and the rudder bearings in both hulls. A beam that wide also means thinking ahead about berths: not every marina has a spare slot for a cat. Service records for the engines, the rigging and the sails tell a buyer far more than the build year alone.
