Perry Catamarans; cover, cost and conditions
Perry Catamarans is an Australian yard whose boats go back to the designer Bryan Perry, a third-generation boatbuilder. After the original company closed, the Tasmanian boatbuilder Allan Barnett, himself a former Perry 43 owner, brought production back. Perry now runs the build shop at Coomera on Queensland's Gold Coast, and Barnett describes the business as a family firm again. The yard builds cruising catamarans for long passages. The Perry 43 Passagemaker was drawn for the heavy weather of the southern oceans and usually comes with three cabins, two heads and twin diesels. The flagship is the Perry 57 Passagemaker.
Our model records list three designs: two sailing catamarans and one power catamaran. The Perry 43 carries build years from 1995 to 2012 and measures 13.1 metres. The Perry 57 passagemaker follows from 2003 to 2014 and, at 17.37 metres, is the largest boat of the brand. The Perry 44.5 is listed as a power catamaran of 13.56 metres, built from 2004 to 2012. None of the three lines reaches into the most recent build years, so the boats on the market today come from a production span of almost two decades. All three are well over 13 metres long.
Catamarans built for long passages tend to have worked hard, so a survey of a used Perry should look at the underside of the bridgedeck for signs of slamming, at the chainplates and standing rigging, and at both engines and their drivetrains. Two hulls mean two sets of through-hulls, bilges and steering gear to inspect. Many of these boats have made ocean crossings, so ask for logbooks and the history of any refits. The timber joinery inside wants dry bilges and good ventilation. On the Perry 44.5 the focus shifts to the engines, the fuel system and the cooling circuits.
