Protector Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Protector Boats are rigid inflatables built by Rayglass in Auckland, New Zealand. Rayglass has been making fibreglass boats since 1985, and founder Tony Hembrow launched the first Protector in 1997: a fibreglass hull topped with buoyancy tubes. They soon served with the Coastguard and as chase boats at the America's Cup. You can tell a Protector by its range names, Targa, Chase, Center Console and Cabin, by the length in feet with a prime mark on older models, and by three digit numbers such as 310 or 410 on newer ones. The Tauranga and Hauraki take their names from New Zealand.
Our model records list 26 Protector models, all rigid inflatables. Build years run from 1996 to 2027, and nine models continue into current production. Lengths span 7.1 to 14 metres, half of them between 9.25 and 11.8, with a median of 10.4. The Targa range with its wheelhouse is the largest at nine models, from the Targa 28' at nine metres to the Targa 410 at 12.8. Six Center Console models cover 22 to 38 feet, and the Chase runs from the 250 at 7.5 metres to the 410 at 12.8. Two Cabin models, the Hauraki 40' and the Tauranga at 38, 41 and 46 feet, the biggest measuring 14 metres, complete the list.
Protectors are used as fast day boats, dive platforms, tenders and commuters, often with twin or triple outboards. Their value depends heavily on engine hours and the age of those outboards, on the condition of the tubes, which wear out long before the hull, and on the electronics fitted at the helm.
