Redbay Boats comes from Cushendall on the north Antrim coast of Northern Ireland. Tom McLaughlin started the business in 1977 at the age of 18, planning at first to build wooden clinker boats. Fast fishing boats of 16 to 21 feet followed under the Fastfisher name, then the Ski-sport 136 and 166 speedboats. The yard needed a RIB of its own for regular runs across the North Channel to Scotland, so one of those speedboats was adapted, and the Stormforce was born. In 1993 a Stormforce won three offshore legs of the Scottish RIB Challenge in rough weather. The boats pair a glassfibre hull with an inflatable tube, and many carry a cabin or canopy. McLaughlin's son Conor now works in the family firm.

Our model records list 15 Stormforce designs, 13 RIBs and two motor yachts. The smallest is the Stormforce 610 at 6.1 metres, the largest the Stormforce 1650 at 16.5 metres, and the 1450 and 1650 are listed as motor yachts. Several sizes come in variants: the 750 as Canopy and Open, the 850 as Cabin, Canopy and Open, the 1150 as Cabin, Canopy and Sea Safari. The 650, the 950, the 1250 at 13.5 metres and the GF1050 complete the list. The Stormforce 650 is recorded from 2006, all the others from 2021. All 15 reach into the most recent build years, and seven measure ten metres or more.

A Stormforce is meant for open, lumpy water, and a used one should be judged with that in mind. Look along the tube for chafe at the bow and wherever it meets pontoons, and check that each chamber holds pressure. The hull should be free of stress cracks around the console, seat mountings and transom, the points that take the load when a boat lands off a wave. Cabin and canopy versions add windows, hatches and seals that need to stay watertight. Outboard or inboard, the engine history matters more than shiny gelcoat. Boats up to the 850 trail well, so the brakes and rollers of the trailer deserve a look too.
