Rhebergen is a Dutch yard for multihulls. Simon Rhebergen began building catamarans in 1983 and today runs the works in Amsterdam North together with his son. The house both builds and repairs, across the whole width of the multihull field: catamarans, trimarans and proas, in lengths from seven to over twenty metres. Boats were also built to designs by Australian naval architects, whose names recur in our model records. You recognise them by the slender hulls with a high bridgedeck, the very straight sheer and the utilitarian finish.
Our model records list 54 Rhebergen models: 43 cabin sailing catamarans, three open sailing catamarans, one sailing trimaran and seven motor yachts. Recorded build years run from 1994 to 2003. Fifty four series are recorded: the small Butterfly, the Fishing Kat 69, the Tauch-Kat 73, the charter and cruiser models 126, 213 and 220, the Kreuzer 55 and 85, the Kreuzer and Racing 226, the high speed catamarans 191 and 217, the Grainger designs 075 Mk2, 37 and 1250 and the Crowther 201 BR. Lengths run from 4.3 to 45.2 metres, half the models between 10.7 and 15.5 metres.
Two things define this stable. A multihull has two hulls, a load bearing bridgedeck and no ballast keel, so the stresses sit in the cross structure. And these boats were built in small numbers, often to other people's drawings and sometimes as one offs, which means two boats of the same design can be very different objects.
