Ribco; cover, cost and conditions
Ribco is a Greek builder of large rigid inflatable boats. Stylianos Ladopoulos and Valerianos Nikas founded the company in 1994, and in June 1999 the first Ribco, an eight metre RIB, was launched in Athens. The idea was to marry an offshore hull with a deck laid out for long Mediterranean days: space for sunbathing, seating, and berths tucked away underneath. The Venom models are easy to recognise by their stepped hulls. On the Venom 44 the three-step glassfibre hull was drawn by naval architect Lorne Campbell, with a very fine entry and 24 degrees of deadrise at the transom.
Our model records list two designs, both RIBs from the Venom line. The Venom 44 measures 13.15 metres and is listed from 2013 to 2020. The Venom 40 at 11.95 metres starts in 2022 and reaches into current production. According to the builder it has a newly developed two-step hull, and the SC version adds a cabin for two and a heads with shower. Below the deck of the Venom 44 there are two double berths, a toilet compartment and a wet bar with sink and fridge, so both boats can be slept aboard.
A RIB of this size is run fast and often far offshore, and a used one should be inspected with that in mind. The tubes come first: look at seams, valves and the bond to the hull, and at chafe where fenders and lines rub. Stepped hulls deserve a careful look at the steps themselves and at the transom area for stress cracks. Engine hours, service records and the state of the steering and trim systems tell much of the story. Twin engine installations should be judged as a pair, since one tired engine changes how the boat behaves at speed.
