Worth knowing
RM Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
In La Rochelle, RM builds sailing yachts between 9 and 12 metres from plywood and epoxy, a method of construction that is lighter and stiffer than GRP and has its origins in racing boat building. The yachts are fast, with a chined hull and twin rudders, and they have a loyal following among cruising sailors.
Plywood and epoxy counts as wooden construction within the meaning of the terms and conditions: a surcharge from a sum insured of 20,000 euros, with a valuation report as the basis of the agreed value. What distinguishes this construction is its durability when properly maintained, because the epoxy seals the wood in. What makes it sensitive is damage to the coating: a deep scratch that reaches the wood must be sealed immediately, otherwise moisture gets in. That is maintenance, not an insured event.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is plywood and epoxy insured like wood?
Yes, it counts as wooden construction, with a surcharge from a sum insured of 20,000 euros and a valuation report as the basis of the agreed value. Damage events are covered, moisture damage resulting from a damaged coating is not.

Series by RM Yachts, with value and cover
RM 1070 / 1180 is a sailing yacht from RM Yachts (France), built since 2010, and today changes hands at between €180,000 and €480,000.
RM 1370 is a sailing yacht from RM Yachts (France), built since 2014, and today changes hands at between €420,000 and €780,000.
RM 970 Holz-Epoxid is a sailing yacht from RM Yachts (France), built since 2000, and today changes hands at between €130,000 and €490,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
