The designs listed under Roberts Boat Co. Inc. come from the drawing board of Bruce Roberts, an Australian naval architect whose real name was Robert Bruce Goodson. His office dates from 1966 and sells plans to professional yards and amateur builders alike, for steel, aluminium, fibreglass, wood epoxy and plywood. A familiar example is the Mauritius 43, a centre cockpit cruiser he drew in 1969. Since his death, his long-standing associate Hal Whitacre has looked after the plans in the United States. Twenty one designs measure ten metres or more, seven at least 15 metres, and the largest is the Roberts 70 at 21.4 metres.

With designs built by so many different hands, the individual boat matters far more than the name. Before buying a used Roberts it is worth finding out who built it, from which material and to what standard. Steel hulls need a careful look for rust behind linings and in the bilge, ideally with ultrasonic thickness readings, while on fibreglass hulls the questions are osmosis and the joint between hull and deck. Home-built yachts may come with sparse paperwork, so photos from the build, receipts for engine and rig and earlier survey reports are valuable. The Mauritius 43 was drawn for long passages, and a well kept example can still set off across open water.
