The Rock name leads back to the British designer John Rock and his Tradewind yachts. Rock drew the Tradewind 33 after asking sailing friends what their ideal offshore cruiser would look like. The answer was a heavy displacement boat with a long keel, ballast encapsulated in the moulding and a keel-hung rudder, meant for ocean passages with a small crew. Several firms built her in glassfibre, among them John Rock himself and Frederick Mitchell in Poole, and in the seventies she was also sold as a kit or as a bare hull and deck. John Rock (Yachts) Limited was registered in 1977, became Tradewind Yachts Limited in 1986 and was dissolved in 2011.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts. The Tradewind 33 measures 10.05 metres and is listed from 1974 to 1990; the Tradewind 39 at 11.82 metres runs from 1977 to 1986. Neither line reaches the most recent build years, so even the youngest boats are more than three decades old. The 33 was launched as a sloop, and many owners have since converted her to a cutter. Her successor, the Tradewind 35 with longer ends and a larger rudder, does not appear in our records.
These are boats that people still take across oceans, and a used one should be judged with that in mind. Look at the chainplates and standing rigging, especially on boats converted to cutter rig, where the inner forestay adds load to the deck. The encapsulated keel means there are no keel bolts to worry about, but it is worth checking the bottom of the keel for grounding damage and water getting into the ballast cavity. The keel-hung rudder deserves a look at its pintles and gudgeons. Because some hulls were finished from kits, the quality of the fit-out varies from boat to boat.
