Rogers, Jeremy Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Jeremy Rogers opened his yard in Lymington, Hampshire, in 1961 at the age of 23, after an apprenticeship with a wooden boatbuilder. He was among the first to take up glassfibre in the sixties. The Contessa 26 made the name, with sisterships winning the Round Britain Race, and the Contessa 32, drawn by Rogers with David Sadler and launched in 1971, carried it further. In the stormy Fastnet of 1979 the Contessa 32 Assent was the only boat in her class to finish. The business went into receivership in the eighties and the moulds were sold; in 1995 Rogers bought back the Contessa 32 moulds and built to order again. His son Kit took over the management in 2012.
Our model records hold 16 designs, every one of them a sailing yacht. Eight carry the Contessa name, from the Contessa 25 at 7.7 metres up to the Contessa 43 at 13 metres. Six are listed as Rogers, from the Rogers 28 to the Rogers 43, and the Offshore 34 and OOD 34 complete the list at 10.3 metres each. The oldest entry is the Contessa 26 from 1964, the last build year shown is 1990 for the Rogers 32, and no design runs into recent production. Half of the yachts stay below ten metres; only the Contessa 43 and Rogers 43 pass twelve.
These are narrow, deep-keeled boats from an era that valued sea-keeping over interior volume, and many have been sailed hard across open water. On a used example the keel bolts and the joint between keel and hull deserve a close look, as does the chainplate area where decades of load end up. Original deck fittings may need rebedding, and older standing rigging should be renewed on a schedule rather than when it fails. Owners often add self-steering, new electrics and modern sails, so a well documented refit history says more than the build year.
