Rose Island S.r.l.; cover, cost and conditions

Rose Island is an Italian yard founded in 1999. It was among the first in Italy to build yachts on the lines of the American lobster boat, the working craft of the New England coast, and the Lobster name for its range is registered to the company. Aldo Gatti drew the hulls and Marino Alfani the interiors, and the yard quotes speeds above 30 knots for its designs. A Rose Island is easy to place by its classic Downeast profile, a style rooted in the north-east of the United States and carried here into the Mediterranean.

Our model records list twelve motor yachts from 11.8 to 20.24 metres. At the heart of the range sits the Lobster line with six designs: the 38, 43, 49, 53, 60 and 65. The Lobster 38 and 49 appear from 2003, as do the Lobster 60 and the Pathfinder 58 Cruise; the Lobster 65 followed in 2005, the Lobster 43 and the Pathfinder 58 Family and Mac in 2006. From 2013 came the Lobster 53 and the Giano line with the Giano 12 and Giano MK II. The Pathfinder 58 appears in four versions, each 17.75 metres long. Eight designs reach the most recent build years; the Lobster 60 ends in 2012 and three Pathfinder versions in 2019. The largest boat is the Lobster 65 at 20.24 metres.

A Downeast-style yacht invites long ownership, and many stay with the same family for years. On a used boat the joinery, deck hardware and varnish show how carefully it has been looked after. Fast planing hulls of this size put real loads on shafts, struts and stern gear, so an inspection out of the water and a sea trial at cruising speed are both worthwhile. Engine hours, service intervals and the state of the exhaust system tell much of the story. Most of these yachts cruise coastal waters in summer, often with long stays at anchor.
