Worth knowing

Rossiter Yachts Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

Rossiter Yachts grew out of a boatyard on the river Avon at Christchurch on England's south coast. In 1936 Charles Purbrook, a silversmith, built himself a clinker sailing dinghy that became the Coot class, and in 1938 he moved to the riverside yard. Hugh Rossiter, trained as a naval architect with hands-on yard experience, joined in 1949 and took over in 1951, carrying on with wooden boats to the firm's own designs. His 27 foot Pintail of 1962 was built in wood until 1970, when the hulls moved to glassfibre. In 2018 the company began merging with Christchurch Marine to form Rossiter Marine Ltd.

Our model records hold two designs, both sailing yachts and both 9.75 metres long. The Curlew is listed from 1978 to 1997, the Lapwing from 1990 to 1997, so neither line reaches the most recent build years. Hugh Rossiter drew the Curlew; she was first built in carvel wood in 1980 and in glassfibre from 1981. She is a heavy displacement boat with shoal draught and a lifting keel, and she bears a clear resemblance to the cruising designs of Maurice Griffiths. The older Pintail is not part of our records.

Any Curlew or Lapwing on the market today is at least a quarter of a century old. The lifting keel is the first thing to look at: check the keel, its pivot and the lifting tackle for wear, and look for weeping around the keel box. A heavy hull like this moves gently in a seaway and suits shallow creeks and drying moorings. Wooden Curlews need the usual attention to seams and fastenings, while glassfibre boats deserve a moisture check below the waterline and a look at the deck fittings. A proper survey before buying is time well spent.
