Row & Sail GmbH comes from Austria and builds the XCat, a small catamaran that can be rowed as well as sailed. Its founder and designer is Jochum Bierma. The two hulls are thermo-moulded from particle foam and weigh under 40 pounds each, with the complete boat at around 120 pounds. The XCat is easy to pick out by its RowVista rowing system, which lets the rower face forward, with folding oars, a sliding seat and foot pads. In sailing form it carries a square-headed mainsail with flotation built into the head and a jib set on a full-length bowsprit. An electric motor can be added, with its lithium battery mounted in the middle.
Our model records list three versions, all reaching into the most recent build years. The XCat Row and XCat Sail both start in 2013 and measure 5 metres each. The XCat Basic followed in 2014 and at 2.15 metres is much shorter. Two entries, Basic and Row, carry the code for motor catamarans, while the Sail is filed as a sailing catamaran. Behind all three lies the same idea: a light twin hull that works as a rowing boat, a sailing boat or an electric runabout depending on the kit fitted. There is no older production; the whole range is less than twelve years old and still running.
Most of these boats spend more time on a car roof or a light trailer than on a mooring. Because the parts are small and light, assembly and packing are part of every outing, so pins, clips and the rowing linkage should be checked for wear and lost parts each time. Foam hulls shrug off knocks well but should be looked over for dents and abrasion after landing on gravel beaches. Rinsing the rig and the moving parts of the rowing gear with fresh water after salt water use keeps them running freely. A used XCat should come with all its parts, from bowsprit to battery charger, since missing pieces are the usual weak point.
