Sail Craft; cover, cost and conditions
Sail Craft Ltd. was based at Brightlingsea in Essex, on the east coast of England. Reg White, later an Olympic gold medallist, founded the firm in 1960. Rod Macalpine-Downie served as its chief designer, and the partnership produced a line of cruising catamarans with a sporting edge: Iroquois, Cherokee and Apache. An Iroquois Mk I is documented as early as 1966. For the Apache the source mentions fin keels, a skeg hung rudder and the ability to dry out resting on the keels, and the boat was built to Lloyd's specifications.
Our model records list six Sail Craft designs, every one of them a sailing catamaran. The two Apaches have the longest runs: the Apache 45 MK III at 12.2 metres is listed from 1966 to 1987, and the Apache 40, also 12.2 metres, from 1967 to 1984. The Iroquois appears twice, as the MK II Iroquois at 9.2 metres from 1972 to 1979 and as the Iroquois at 9.6 metres from 1974 to 1983. Then come the Cherokee at 10.63 metres, listed from 1975 to 1982, and the Comanche 32 at 9.82 metres from 1975 to 1987. No line reaches into recent build years; the latest entries date from 1987. Four of the six designs stay under eleven metres.
A Sail Craft catamaran is now a classic, and buying one means judging how the last fifty years have treated it. Look closely at the bridge deck and the joints between hulls and crossbeams, where loads concentrate in a seaway. Because the boats can take the ground on their keels, check the keel roots and the hull skin around them for repairs or soft spots. Rudders hung on skegs deserve a look at bearings and pintles. Many of these cats sailed the tidal waters of the Thames estuary and the east coast, and a well kept example remains a quick and roomy boat for coastal cruising. Original paperwork and a recent survey add much to a purchase.

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,
and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
