SAY Carbon Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
SAY Carbon Yachts was founded on Lake Constance in 2006 by Sven Akerman. In 2014 Karl Wagner, who had built carbon parts for racing and high end cars with CarboTech Composites, took over and steered the yard towards motorboats in carbon fibre reinforced plastic. After financial trouble the company passed to Martin Pedersen in 2024. Exposed carbon weave, very low superstructures and long, narrow hulls built for speed at low weight make a SAY easy to recognise. The number in the name is close to the length in feet, the suffix names the version.
Our model records hold eight SAY designs. Four are listed as motor yachts, the SAY 29 Runabout and the SAY 42 as Open Carbon, Runabout and Speedster. Three are RIBs, the SAY 31 RIB, the 45 RIB and the 45 RIB Speedster, and the SAYCAT Tender is a power catamaran. The 29 Runabout opens the list in 2013, all others start in 2014, and the 29 Runabout, 42 Open Carbon and 45 RIB run into the most recent build years. Lengths go from the 7.3 metre SAYCAT Tender via the 8.9 metre 29 Runabout and 9.5 metre 31 RIB to the 13.7 metre 45 RIB, with the three 42 models at 12.8 metres each.
Carbon is light and stiff but needs specialist hands when it is damaged, so a SAY is best kept where a composite workshop is within reach. On lakes and sheltered coasts the boats are often trailed or lifted in and out for each outing; a well padded trailer and a lifting plan suited to the hull matter more than with an ordinary GRP runabout.
