Worth knowing
SBS Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
SBS Ltd. is the name under which our records file the F-RIB, a rigid inflatable that folds. The idea is patented worldwide and tackles an old trade-off: a solid hull makes a RIB drier and more sure-footed than a soft inflatable, but it also makes the boat awkward to stow. On the F-RIB the V-shaped glassfibre bottom is split into three sections that are bonded to the tubes. To launch, the owner unfolds the sections, slots the tongues into their grooves, fits two bolts and pumps up the tubes, which the maker says takes under five minutes. The PVC tubes are divided into three separate chambers. Folded, an F-RIB 330 measures roughly 105 by 94 by 45 centimetres, weighs 43 kilograms and carries four people.
Our model records list eight F-RIB designs, all filed as inflatables. The number in the name gives the length in centimetres, more or less: the F-RIB 275 is 2.75 metres long, the 330 is 3.3, the 360 is 3.6 and the 375 is 3.75 metres, while the 430 and 460 measure 4.35 and 4.47 metres. Two variants round out the list, the F-RIB 275 Fishing, recorded from 2013 to 2020, and the F-RIB 460S, which at 4.6 metres is the longest model and ran from 2013 to 2019. The F-RIB 330 is the earliest entry with build year 2012; the rest start in 2013 or 2014. Six of the eight designs run into the most recent build years.
A folding boat lives its hardest life at the joints. When buying second hand, set the boat up completely and check the seams between the three hull sections, the tongue and groove edges and the bolt holes for cracks or wear. The bond between hull and tubes deserves a close look along its whole length, and each of the three chambers should hold pressure overnight. PVC dislikes long hours of strong sun, so a boat that has lived on a sunny deck may show chalky or sticky patches. Rinse salt and sand out of the joints before folding and stow the boat dry. Used as a tender, it often carries a small outboard, so look at the transom as well.
