Schionning Designs; cover, cost and conditions

Schionning Designs is a catamaran design office, a family business started by Jeff Schionning. It draws sailing and power catamarans, and the boats are built to its plans by a range of yards and home builders, most often in Australia, Thailand and South Africa. Many boats therefore share one design yet differ in fit out and equipment. The best known are the Wilderness and Waterline sailing cats and the Prowler, which Jeff Schionning first drew as a 9 metre power catamaran. Four digit numbers usually give the length in centimetres, and several Wilderness designs carry an X.

Our model records hold 15 Schionning designs, eleven sailing catamarans and four power catamarans. Eight belong to the Wilderness family, from the 1040 X to the 1650 X, joined by the Waterline 1160 and 1480 and the Cosmos 1430. The power cats are the Prowler 9000, Prowler 950 VT, Alskan 41 and Aquaplay. The Wilderness 1040 X opens the list in 1990, and the latest recorded year is 2019 for the Wilderness 1500 X. Lengths run from 9 metres for the Prowler 9000 to 16.5 metres for the Wilderness 1650 X.

A plan built catamaran is only as good as its builder, so build records, laminate quality and the condition of the bridge deck matter more than the design name. Wide beam calls for a suitable berth or a hard stand, and many owners use these boats for long coastal passages and life aboard.
