Shepherd; cover, cost and conditions

Shepherd is an Ontario name. Lloyd Shepherd and his son Howard started building boats in St. Catharines in 1928 and moved in 1939 to Niagara-on-the-Lake, where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario. The yard made its name with mahogany runabouts that had high freeboard and generous room inside, built for the short, steep seas of the Great Lakes. As early as the mid-1930s Shepherd used the V-drive, which moves the engine aft towards the transom and frees space further forward. Express cruisers, cabin boats of 30 to 40 feet and yachts of around 50 feet followed. Father and son sold to James Hahn in 1958, and Trojan Yachts of Pennsylvania took over in 1966. The last boat left the yard in 1978, once fibreglass had pushed wood aside.

Our model records hold a single design, the Shepherd 46. It is listed as a motor yacht, built from 1965 to 1972 and 14.05 metres long, which matches the 46 feet in its name. That places it in the years when the works on the Niagara turned to large motor yachts, right across the change of ownership to Trojan. No entry reaches the recent build years, as production ended decades ago. The small runabouts that made the name famous do not appear in our records. Anyone taking on a Shepherd 46 today is buying a yacht more than fifty years old, usually with several owners behind it.

A yacht of this age is only as good as its last survey. On a boat from a yard that worked in wood, the condition of planking, frames and fastenings matters most, along with any signs of rot around deck openings and the engine beds. Engines have often been changed over the decades, so the history of each refit is worth asking for. Many of these yachts spent their lives on fresh water on the Great Lakes, which treats hull and fittings differently from salt water. A well kept example with documented work is a very different proposition from one that has stood neglected ashore.
