SK Jachtbouw is a yard in Sneek, in the Dutch province of Friesland, a town ringed by lakes and canals. Its motor yachts are sold as the SK Kotter, and they are built in steel. A broker's brochure for the SK Kotter 1300 describes a steel hull with several hard chines, while a 2003 SK Kotter 1200 Spitsgat is listed with a 4.30 metre beam, a big aft cockpit and a roomy saloon. Spitsgat is the Dutch word for a pointed, canoe-shaped stern. Older types turn up on the brokerage market as well, such as the SK Kotter 1200 from 2001 and a 1400 from 2006 whose hull was built at the yard. They are not in our model records but show that Kotter yachts left Sneek well before the current range.
Our model records hold eight SK Kotter motor yachts. The number in the name is the length in centimetres: the SK Kotter 1050 is 10.5 metres long, and the 1150, 1250 and 1350 step up a metre at a time to the SK Kotter 1450 at 14.5 metres. The 1350 is listed from 2013 and the other large models from 2014, while the SK Kotter Vlet 800 joined in 2017. Two Cabrio versions, the Cabrio 800 and the Cabrio 925 at 8 and 9.25 metres, appear from 2014 to 2021. Six designs run into the most recent build years: the five larger Kotters and the Vlet 800, which shares the shortest length of 8 metres with the Cabrio 800.
Steel forgives a knock in a lock but asks for steady attention. On a used SK Kotter, look for rust wherever water lingers: under deck fittings, along the waterline, in the bilge below the engine and behind the interior lining, where condensation collects. An ultrasonic thickness survey of the plating tells you more than any fresh paint. Check the sacrificial anodes and when they were last changed, the coating below the waterline and the condition of the inboard diesel and its cooling. Heating, bow thruster and electronics are often added over the years and should come with paperwork. These yachts are made for long weeks on inland waters and gentle coastal passages.
