Worth knowing
Skarpnes; cover, cost and conditions
Skarpnes Båtbyggeri was based in Arendal on Norway's south coast and had a name for sturdy, seaworthy boats. The yard came from fishing boats: its glassfibre cruisers have hulls shaped after its own proven wooden fishing boats. The Skarpnes 30 is regarded as a classic semi-planing snekke with fine lines, a hull that combines displacement manners with some lift and stays calm in a seaway. In 1989 the 30 gained stabilisers in the hull to cut rolling in a beam sea, and boats from that year are among the last delivered from the Arendal factory. They are easy to recognise by the high, fishing-boat bow, the wheelhouse and, on many boats, an aft cabin.
Our model records list four designs, all classed as motor yachts: the Skarpnes 25, Skarpnes 25 WE, Skarpnes 30 and Skarpnes 35. The 30 is the backbone of the brand, listed from 1977 to 2001, a run of 24 years. The two 25 models, each 7.5 metres long, start in 1984 and 1986 and end in 1992 and 1993. The 35, at 10.55 metres, appears from 1985 to 1993, and the 30 measures 9.1 metres. No line reaches the recent build years; the youngest entries in the list date from 2001. Sizes stay close together, with just over three metres between the smallest and the largest design.
A Skarpnes is an older inboard cruiser, built to take Norwegian coastal weather, and that shapes what a buyer should check. Look at engine hours, shaft seal, cutlass bearing and exhaust, and ask when the diesel was last serviced. Around the wheelhouse, windows and their seals often need renewing after decades of sun and frost. Moisture readings on the hull and deck tell more than a fresh coat of polish. Many owners use these boats for long summer trips along the skerries, so a well kept heating system, a sound fridge and good ground tackle add real value.
