Skeeta Foiling Craft Pty Ltd; cover, cost and conditions

Skeeta Foiling Craft is a father and son business from Australia. Jim and David French have been refining their idea of a simple, approachable foiling dinghy since 2015. Where most foilers are narrow, the Skeeta sits on a broad, scow-shaped hull. That shape gives plenty of form stability while the boat is still in displacement mode, which cuts the chance of a capsize before it lifts off. Ride height is set by a retractable wand at the bow that can be adjusted on the move and brings the boat quickly back down when needed. Both designs can also be sailed without foils. Production runs through a manufacturing partnership with COBRA International, and the number in each model name refers to the sail area in square metres.

Our model records list four designs, all of them sailing dinghies: the Nikki 5.5, Nikki 6.5, Skeeta 8.5 and Skeeta 9.5. The Skeeta 8.5 appears from 2015, the other three from 2017, and every one of them continues into the most recent build years. Both Nikki versions measure 2.9 metres, the Skeeta 8.5 3.35 metres and the Skeeta 9.5 3.66 metres, so the whole range stays below four metres. The Nikki is aimed at young sailors of roughly 25 to 65 kilograms, from about eight years old, while the Skeeta suits sailors of 60 to 100 kilograms. The builder gives a take-off speed of around 7.5 knots for the Skeeta.

Foils are the part that needs the closest eye. After every session it pays to rinse the foils and the wand linkage with fresh water and to check the front and rear edges for knocks, since a small chip changes how the boat flies. A launching trolley and road trailer take the boat to and from the water, so the hull bottom and the foil cases see the most wear at the slipway. When looking at a used Skeeta or Nikki, check the wand mechanism for play, inspect the foil case for cracks where the loads enter the hull, and ask how the boat has been stored over winter. The broad hull forgives a lot in displacement mode, which makes these boats a natural first step into foiling for clubs and families.
