Sly Yachts is an Italian yard devoted to fast cruisers. Its specialism is performance cruising yachts between 38 and 61 feet, built in carbon. The lines come from Marco Lostuzzi's studio, Lostuzzi Yacht Design & Engineering, which designs sailing boats meant to work both as racers and as cruisers. In 2010 Sly Marine SRL, owned by the Trevisani family, took over the brand and kept production going in the yard at Cesena. A Sly is recognisable by its low, sporty profile. For the Sly 53 the yard describes an open stern, no overhangs, very limited freeboard and maximum beam moved well aft. Lightweight carbon construction is meant to keep the boats quick and responsive.

Our model records hold four designs, all sailing yachts: the Sly 42, the Sly 47 Cruiser, the Sly 47 Racer and the Sly 53. Each of them starts in 2003. The Sly 47 Racer ends as early as 2007, the Sly 53 runs to 2011, the Sly 47 Cruiser to 2012 and the Sly 42 to 2013, so none of the lines reaches the most recent build years. Lengths range from 12.8 metres for the Sly 42 to 16 metres for the Sly 53, with both versions of the 47 at 14.2 metres. Listing the 47 in a cruiser and a racer version fits the idea behind the brand: quick passages and club racing from the same family of boats.

Carbon spars and composite hulls reward careful owners. On a used Sly, ask for the history of the mast and boom, look at the chainplates and the keel attachment, and check the hull for signs of hard groundings or repaired impact damage, which in carbon is not always visible from outside. Racing sails age faster than cruising cloth, so the sail wardrobe deserves its own inspection. The youngest boats of the brand are now more than a decade old, which makes a full survey and the paperwork on rigging replacement more important than the build year alone. Many examples will have raced at some point, and a racer turned cruiser, or the other way round, shows it in deck hardware and interior weight.
