Slyder Catamarans; cover, cost and conditions

Slyder Catamarans is a German-designed brand of cruising catamarans under sail. The name first appeared on a 47-foot catamaran built at a yard in Fano, Italy, under the direction of the Swiss composite specialist Christian Paulitsch. The lines come from Yacht Design Collective, the team of François Perus and Romain Scolari. Sailor and entrepreneur Markus Kuhner later revived the project, reworking the boat, her equipment and the build methods, and placed construction of the Slyder 49 with Mazarin, a yard on the outskirts of Qingdao in China. Narrow hulls, light construction, a powerful rig and asymmetric daggerboards give the boats a sporting character, while the interior still puts living comfort first.

Our model records list five designs: four sailing catamarans and the Slyder 59, which is filed as a sailing yacht. The Slyder 47 opens the range at 14.3 metres, recorded from 2011 to 2020. The Slyder 57 and the Slyder 57 Elegance both measure 17.9 metres and span build years 2013 to 2018. Two lines run into the most recent build years: the Slyder 49 at 14.95 metres from 2014 and the Slyder 59 at 17.99 metres from 2015. Every model sits between roughly 14 and 18 metres, so there is no small entry boat in this family.

Light, narrow hulls and daggerboards reward careful handling. On a used boat, look at the daggerboard cases and the boards themselves for signs of grounding, check the bridgedeck and the joints between hulls and deck for stress marks, and have the rig surveyed, since a large multihull rig works under high loads. Cruising catamarans usually carry two engines and a lot of systems, so the service history counts as much as the hull. Boats of this size are often bought for long passages or whole seasons away from home, which makes the state of the electronics, the watermaker and the charging set-up worth a close look before signing.

What this means for the cover

As the Slyder 49 and Slyder 59 by Slyder Catamarans series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Slyder 47, Slyder 57 and Slyder 57 Elegance by Slyder Catamarans series the market value

and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Slyder 49, Slyder 47, Slyder 57 by Slyder Catamarans and further series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.

For the Slyder 59 by Slyder Catamarans series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
