Small Craft; cover, cost and conditions
Small Craft, also known as Small Craft (Blockley) Ltd or Smallcraft of Blockley, was an English builder of compact glassfibre boats. Its best known design is the Shipmate Senior by Norman Howard: just under five metres, with a swing keel and a small cabin with berths for two adults. None of its boats exceeded seven metres, and many names hint at the length in centimetres, such as Senator 465, Senator 565 or Seafairer 533.
Our model records hold nine Small Craft designs, six sailing boats and three motorboats. On the sail side are the Privateer, the Shipmate, the Shipmate Senior and the Senator 465, 565 and 675; the motorboats are the Seafairer 533, the Sportsman 5 and the Sportsman 650. Build years run from 1971 to 1985. Lengths range from the 4.65 metre Senator 465 to the 6.71 metre Senator 675, and the motorboats sit between 5.14 and 6.54 metres.
Every Small Craft boat is now more than forty years old, so condition decides almost everything. A swing keel wants its pivot, lifting wire and case checked before each season, and older outboards on the Sportsman models deserve a proper service. These boats live happily on a road trailer in the driveway, which makes winter work easy and lets owners change waters at the weekend.
