SmartKat is an inflatable sailing catamaran designed by Kurt Heiligenmann. According to the maker, every boat is built by hand in Steyr, Austria, to a design engineered in Germany. The idea is simple: two inflatable PVC hulls, a modular anodised frame and a patented centreboard that the company calls the heart of each boat and the main reason for its low weight. A test report puts the sailing weight at about 42 kilograms, and the whole boat packs into two bags, small enough to slide under a bed or check in for a flight. The maker quotes a set-up time of around 20 minutes. Fat air-filled hulls under a small rig, with rudder and board on the centreline, make it easy to spot on a beach.

The Smartkat Adventure at 4.2 metres starts in 2014 and the Smartkat High Performance at 4.6 metres in 2017, both also ending in 2021. The Smartkat Race measures 5 metres, runs from 2012 to 2019 and is filed under its own code. Only one line reaches the most recent build years: the SmartKat 460 at 4.6 metres, listed from 2018. Four of the five are classed as sailing catamarans.
An inflatable lives a different life from a boat on a mooring. After each outing, rinse salt and sand off the PVC, dry the hulls before packing and keep the bags out of the sun, since heat and UV age the fabric. Check the valves and seams for slow leaks, look at the frame joints for corrosion and play, and inspect the centreboard and rudder for knocks from beach landings. When buying a used SmartKat, inflate it fully and leave it overnight to see whether it holds pressure, count the frame parts against the parts list and ask how often it has travelled. A boat that has spent years folded in a damp cellar can hide mould and tacky fabric.
