Sobusiak Yacht Yard; cover, cost and conditions

Sobusiak Yacht Yard is the business of Mariusz Sobusiak in Lodz, central Poland, where he builds small sailing yachts under the Focus name. The Focus 750 was designed by Jerzy Piesniewski, and its hull and deck are a foam-cored GRP sandwich made by vacuum infusion. It comes with a fully retracting ballast keel or, as an option, a fixed keel with a lead bulb, plus a lifting rudder, so it launches from a ramp and tows easily at 2.50 metres wide. The names give the length in centimetres (730, 750, 800), and the suffixes Cruiser, Performance and Racer show the intended use.

Our records list nine Sobusiak models, all sailing yachts from the Focus line. The 7.35 metre Focus 730 comes as Cruiser, Daily Cruiser and Racer, the 7.5 metre Focus 750 as a base version and a Performance, and the 8 metre Focus 800 as Cruiser, Performance and Racer. The 9 metre Focus 30 tops the range. The 730 Cruiser opens the list in 2006, the Focus 800 models and the 750 Performance follow in 2011, the 750 in 2019 and the Focus 30 in 2020. Six lines run into the latest build years, while the 730 Daily Cruiser and 730 Racer end in 2021 and the 800 Racer in 2022.

A Focus suits flexible sailing: a lake in spring, a coastal trip in summer, a club race at the weekend. With the keel up it draws very little and slides onto a trailer at any decent ramp, and in winter it fits into a barn or a large garage. Keep the keel case and lifting gear clean, replace the lifting line before it frays, and rinse the trailer and its brakes after every launch in salt water.

What this means for the cover

As the Focus 30, Focus 730 Cruiser,

Focus 750 by Sobusiak Yacht Yard and 3 more series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Focus 800 Racer, Focus 730 Daily Cruiser and Focus 730 Racer by Sobusiak Yacht Yard series

the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Focus 30, Focus 730 Cruiser, Focus 750 by Sobusiak Yacht Yard and further series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
