Spaekhugger; cover, cost and conditions
Spækhugger is Danish for the killer whale, and the animal really did inspire the boat. Peter Bruun, a Danish boatbuilder and designer, drew it in 1969 as his very first design, meant for cruising as much as for racing. He liked the round, smooth shapes of the orca and joined them to the pointed stern of the old Scandinavian double-enders. Bruun had learned from Aage Utzon, whose pointed-stern boats had a large following in Denmark. The boats were built in glassfibre, and the English encyclopaedia names Flipper Scow as the builder. A Spækhugger is easy to pick out: rounded canoe stern, a narrow hull 2.33 metres wide, a fin keel drawing about 1.45 metres and a rudder hung behind a skeg.

Many owners race their boats at club level, so sails and running rigging may be well used even when the hull looks tidy. The narrow hull heels early but stiffens, and the boat rewards a crew that sails it upright.
