Spair Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Spair Marine was a French yard in Douai, in the north of France, that built small cabin sailboats from the 1960s to the 1980s. Its range included the Maraudeur, drawn by Jean-Jacques Herbulot in 1958 and built in turn by several yards, Spair among them. The Tabasco, a cabin boat of about five metres, was its own model and is described as the last design of Pierre Gutelle. Spair boats sit between dinghy and small cruiser, with a simple cabin for weekends on the coast.
Our model records hold seven Spair Marine entries, all sailing boats. One of them, the Maradeur, is a spelling variant of the Maraudeur, leaving six boats: Piaf, Maraudeur, Tabasco, Midship, Surcouf and Corvette. Five begin in 1965, the Tabasco in 1971, and the Maraudeur and Tabasco run until 1984. Lengths go from the 3.75 metre Piaf to the 7 metre Corvette, with the Maraudeur at 4.83, the Tabasco at 5.2, the Midship at 5.35 and the Surcouf at 5.5 metres.
These little French cruisers are made for tidal coasts, estuaries and lakes, launched from a trailer and happy to sit on a drying mooring where their design allows. After forty years, hull to deck joints, keel attachments and old plywood parts in the interior are the usual places to look before buying.
