Worth knowing

Speedwave GmbH; cover, cost and conditions

Speedwave GmbH is based in Kressbronn on Lake Constance, in the water sports centre on the German shore. The company is set up for lightweight construction and boat engineering: it builds yachts and also makes components such as carbon fibre masts and lifting keels. Its work further includes developing and refining sports sailing boats, restoring classic boats, building prototypes and series production of sailing and motor boats. Our records carry one boat under the yard's own name, the Speedwave 9.5, presented by the German magazine Yacht as the spw 9.5 DS. Pascal Kuhn of Ravensburg drew her through his office QN-Yachts, bringing in ideas from his QN32 racer, and Speedwave took on the build.

Our model records list a single design: the Speedwave 9.5, entered as a sailing boat of 9.5 metres, with build years from 2018. The line reaches into the most recent build years, so production is still running. At this length she has the size of a small cruising yacht, yet the idea is a different one. The day on the water comes first; staying aboard overnight is possible, with berths for four adults, while the accommodation stays deliberately simple. The keel can be raised and the mast is made of carbon fibre. On trials on Lake Constance the boat handled a gentle breeze as well as a strong blow.

Carbon spars and a lifting keel ask for attention to detail. On a used boat, have the keel mechanism worked through its full range and check the bearings, seals and lifting gear for wear. A carbon mast should be inspected for impact marks and for chafe around fittings, since damage in a laminate is not always visible from outside. Daysailers on inland lakes tend to spend a lot of time alongside and in tight harbours, so the topsides and the rubbing strake tell part of the story. Fresh water is kind to the hull, but a boat moved between lake and sea needs its hardware rinsed and checked.
