Worth knowing
Sportlake S.A.; cover, cost and conditions
Sportlake S.A. is the earlier name of a yard in Olecko, in the Masurian lake district of north eastern Poland. The brothers Piotr and Wojciech Kot, both keen sailors, started Sportlake in 1990 and built rowing boats at first. In 1999 the business became Stocznia Jachtowa Sportlake S.A. and produced the Sportina and Cortina sailing boat ranges. From 2001 the brothers traded as Delphia Yachts, and since 2019 the yard has been part of the Beneteau group. Sportinas are small cabin sailboats with a lifting keel, which makes them easy to trail and to sail in shallow water. Their model numbers give roughly the length in centimetres, which makes the range easy to read.
Our model records list ten Sportina designs, eight classed as sailing boats and two as sailing yachts. Build years run from 1983 to 2007, and none of them reaches into recent production. The Sportina 595 at 5.95 metres opens the list from 1983, followed by the 680 from 1989, the 620 from 1990 and the 700 from 1992. At the larger end are the Sportina 760 at 7.6 metres and the 950 at 9.5 metres, the only two yachts in the range. Five designs stay under seven metres, among them the 600, 620 and 620 light. The 680 has the longest run, from 1989 to 2007, and together with the 730 and 760 it lasts until 2007.
A lifting keel boat lives an easy life on a trailer, but the keel box and lifting gear need attention. On a used Sportina check the keel winch, the cable or tackle and the bolts around the keel case for weeping. The rudder fittings take a beating when the boat is beached or launched often. Many of these boats have spent years on inland lakes, so osmosis is less common than on sea boats, though the deck fittings and windows may need resealing after decades. A sound road trailer with working lights and good tyres is part of the package, since moving from lake to lake is how most owners use them.
