Spreu Boote; cover, cost and conditions

Spreu-Boote is an inflatable boat maker based in Wuppertal, Germany. Since 1992 it has built its boats by hand from CSM, the material formerly sold as Hypalon: an acid and abrasion resistant synthetic rubber with a middle layer of nylon fabric. The boats are easy to spot by their animal names, above all Hippo, alongside Otter, Mamba, Guppy, Biber and Ducky. Within the Hippo range a number marks the size, Extreme stands for more heavily built versions, and the Otter is an inflatable canoe for lakes, rivers and white water.

Our model records list 26 Spreu-Boote models, all inflatables. Build years run from 1995 to 2027, and 15 models continue into current production. Lengths span 2.9 to 5.5 metres, half of them between 3.7 and 4.5, with a median of 4.1. The Hippo family makes up almost the whole catalogue with 20 models: nine older Hippos built up to 2017, eight current ones from the Hippo 3SB at 2.9 metres to the Hippo 16 SB at 5.5, and three Hippo Extreme between 4.4 and five metres. The Otter canoe at 4.3 and 4.6 metres, the Mamba at 3.5, the Guppy at 3.1, and the Biber 12 and Ducky complete the list.

These boats are rowed, paddled or pushed by a small outboard, and many travel in a car boot or on a trailer. Value depends on the state of the fabric and seams, which can last decades when rinsed and stored dry, on the floor and fittings, and on the age and power of the engine that comes with the boat.
