SQ-Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
SQ Yachts was a small yard in Freienohl in the Sauerland, the town where Dehler yachts were built for many years. Former Dehler staff set it up after Hanseyachts had taken over Dehler and moved production to Greifswald. Its boat was the SQ 25, a trailerable pocket cruiser drawn by Marc-Oliver von Ahlen. She is easy to recognise: an open cockpit with twin transom-hung rudders, chines and bevelled edges along the hull, a fathead mainsail and a retractable gennaker pole. Below deck there is one open space rather than separate cabins. The company did not manage to establish itself and went into insolvency. Through the designer, the moulds passed to Maritime Faserverbundtechnik Haring in Emden, which now builds the boat as the Tide 25.
Our model records hold exactly one design under this name: the SQ 25, listed as a sailing boat of 7.5 metres. The entry starts with build year 2011 and runs into the most recent build years, because the hull lives on under its new name. That makes the SQ 25 both the smallest and the largest boat of the brand; there is no family of sizes. According to the sailing press she was offered with a standard keel and with a shorter one. Anyone looking at a used example should check which version it is, since draft decides where she can go and which trailer suits her. A buyer today will find either a boat from a very small Sauerland production run or a younger sister from Emden with a different name on the topsides.
Life on a trailer shapes how an SQ 25 should be looked after. Rollers and bunks leave marks where they bear on the hull, and the twin rudder fittings take knocks during launching, so both deserve a close look after every season. The gennaker pole slides in and out of the bow and needs its seals and guides kept clean of grit. On a used boat it pays to inspect the keel attachment, the chines for chips and the deck fittings for any sign of water ingress. With one open saloon, ventilation matters: a damp interior is the first thing to check on a boat that has spent winters under a tarpaulin. Raced or cruised, she is light and lively, and a well kept example makes a capable small boat for lakes and coastal hops.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Why does the SQ 25 reach the most recent build years when SQ Yachts went into insolvency?
For SQ-Yachts: After the insolvency the designer, Marc-Oliver von Ahlen,
passed the moulds to Maritime Faserverbundtechnik Haring in Emden,
where the boat is built as the Tide 25.
In our model records the SQ 25 starts with build year 2011.
Which keel options did the SQ 25 have?
For SQ-Yachts: According to the sailing press she came with either a standard keel or a shorter
