Worth knowing

St. Francis Marine Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

St. Francis Marine comes from St Francis Bay on the South African coast. Duncan Lethbridge founded the yard at the end of the eighties, and it began as a family plan: he wanted to go cruising with his wife and children, built a catamaran for himself and showed it around the local yacht clubs before setting sail. The interest that boat drew turned into a business. The St. Francis 50 was drawn by the South African naval architect Angelo Lavranos. The hulls are vacuum infused with vinylester resin over a Corecell foam core. These are cruising catamarans built for long passages, and the design lives on today as the St. Francis 500.

Our model records hold a single design: the St. Francis 50, a sailing catamaran of 15.24 metres, exactly 50 feet. She is listed from build year 2005, and the line reaches into the most recent build years because the design continues as the St. Francis 500. In our data the brand is one of those yards with one type refined over many years instead of a wide range. For a cruising catamaran of this length that means two hulls with cabins, a bridgedeck saloon and a boat built for ocean passages. Anyone looking for a St. Francis 50 will find older and newer examples side by side, all based on the same basic design.

A cored hull rewards a careful survey. On a used St. Francis 50, ask for moisture readings around deck fittings, chainplates and the through-hull openings, since water in a foam core spreads quietly. The underside of the bridgedeck takes the slamming in a seaway and is worth a close look. A boat that has crossed oceans will have worked its rigging hard, so a rig check with the mast down is money well spent. Many of these catamarans were bought for long-distance cruising and come with a lot of gear on board, from watermakers to solar panels, which should all be tested.

series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
