Stangate Marine; cover, cost and conditions

Stangate Marine ran its own yard in Littlehampton on the English south coast for the Banjer 37 and the Rogger series, two motor sailers from the Netherlands. Both came from the drawing board of the Dutch designer Dick Lefeber. Rogger hulls were laid up in glassfibre and fitted out at Eista Werf in Ammerzoden and Nederhemert, while Stangate handled sales outside the Netherlands and finished the last Roggers in England. The Banjer 37 dates from a 1968 design; Stangate sold it in Britain from 1972 and kept building it there until 1979. The boats follow the lines of a North Sea trawler: a high, powerful bow, plenty of displacement, a modest ketch rig and a strong diesel.

Our model records list seven designs, all classed as sailing yachts, with build years from 1964 to 1984. The Banjer at 11.13 metres runs longest, from 1965 to 1984. The Rogger family includes the Rogger Ketch 36 at 10.67 metres, the Rogger FD 36 at 10.75 metres, the Rogger 41 and the Ushant-Rogger 12,5 at 12.5 metres each, and the Rogger 46, the largest at 14 metres. The list also holds the Nicholson 38 at 11.53 metres, filed under this brand in our records and, with build year 1964, the earliest entry. None reaches the most recent build years, and the youngest boats are now more than forty years old.

A motor sailer like the Banjer is more a motor boat with sails than a yacht, and it should be judged that way. The engine is the heart of the boat, so ask for its history, look at the mounts, the shaft seal and the exhaust, and check whether it has been replaced. Heavy glassfibre hulls of this era are robust, but deck fittings, windows and the joint between hull and wheelhouse can let water in after forty years. Teak interiors are often in good order, while gas water heaters and old wiring tend to need renewal. A survey out of the water and a sea trial under engine and sail show what has been kept up.

What this means for the cover

For the Banjer, Rogger 41, Rogger 46 by Stangate Marine and 4 more series there is no list price

left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Banjer, Rogger 41, Rogger 46 by Stangate Marine and further series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
