Star Boat Aps; cover, cost and conditions
Star Boat was a Danish yard based in Stenløse on Zealand. Its range included the B31, drawn by the Swedish designer Bruno Boström with input from Jens Grandinsson, which is why the boat often turns up in listings as the Boström 31 or the Star Boat 31. The B31 Mark II came later. It kept the hull of the first version but gained extra freeboard for more room and a drier interior, together with a redesigned deck and coachroof. The rig is a sloop. Owners describe the B31 as a stable, stiff coastal cruiser that is also sailed across the North Sea.
Our model records list three designs: the B 25 sailing boat at 7.5 metres, built from 1977 to 1991, the B 31 yacht at 9.3 metres, recorded from 1970 to 2010, and the R 37 yacht at 11.1 metres from 1983 to 1996. The B 31 therefore spans four decades and takes in both the early version and the Mark II. None of the three lines reaches the most recent build years. The R 37 is the largest boat of the brand in our records and the only one over ten metres, the B 25 the smallest.
Most Star Boats on the market today were built in the seventies and eighties, so a used one wants the checks any older GRP cruiser needs. Look at the keel joint and keel bolts, at the rudder and its bearings, and at the chainplates, where water can creep into the deck. Standing rigging of unknown age should simply be renewed. On a B31 it helps to know whether the boat is an early version or a Mark II, since the higher freeboard changes the space below. Scandinavian owners tend to keep good records, and a logbook of passages and refits is worth asking for.
